This piece employs non-traditional performance techniques in the concert hall, including foot stomps, performer movement and gestures. Extended techniques include altissimo, multiphonics, slap-tonguing, key noises and bisbigliandi.
The composer writes in the forward, "During the reign of the Taliban in Afghanistan, film and music were banned. After the fall of the Taliban, people rushed into the streets with their radios and brought out their televisions. The Ariana cinema was renovated and reopened in 2004." Ariana, Kaboul is dedicated to Miguel Romero Morán.
