by Robert Lemay. For 2 soprano saxophones.

Dedicated to Rodrigo Vila and Jeffrey E. Vickers, Deuce 3 is an incredible, fantastic new work for 2 soprano saxes! Composer Robert Lemay pulls out all of the stops for this high-quality work. Deuce 3 is a tour-de-force, requiring incredible endurance by both musicians. The piece requires firm and very precise tuning, including altissimo and quarter-tones for both instruments. Other advanced techniques include bisbisliando, multiphonics and slap-tonguing. Approximate duration is 11 minutes.

Published review by Mr. Stephane Sordet, for ASax (France) for the online site of ASax (originally in French) --

"We recognize the mastery of the writing of Robert Lemay, but in this opus, the structure and the writing are slightly different.

In this work in several parts, Lemay strives to create atmospheres, and the atmospheres are varied by changing the modes of play and themes. Each part is articulated around a single theme, which evolves at the very end to bring the next part.

In many ways we immediately have Shane by François Rossé which reappears, Ars by Christian Lauba or Knabenduett by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

This composition will require increased control of the soprano saxophone, especially in the use of the high register at the beginning with perfect support and intonation, or in the quality of the staccato with parts devoted to repeating or slapping notes.

There are very nice sections in bisbigliando or in multiphonics, which brings colors of tranquility and calm in the room, almost a moment of breathing, which is not one for the protagonists.

Deuce 3 will also require saxophonists to have good endurance and perfect homogeneity in the playing - you will understand that this is a demanding piece in all areas.

Despite the technical difficulties, it nevertheless remains that this composition possesses magnificent musical qualities transcended by the very beautiful colors of the soprano saxophones.

My opinion: a beautiful duo of saxophones soprano" Reviewed 1/4/2017
