An unaccompanied work for solo tenor saxophone - duration approximately 6 minutes. Discoïdal was commissioned for World Saxophone Congress XVI by Jeffrey E. Vickers. This highly virtuosic solo exhibits an intensity rarely found for tenor saxophone.
Thierry Alla was a leader in spectral music in France, and his speciality is exhibited in Discoïdal. The entire work is to be performed while circular breathing. A highly chromatic work, full of tone-color changes. Extended techniques include altissimo, bisbigliandi, slap tonguing, and breath sounds.
